The Audacity of the Hydrangea: A Talisman for Visibility

The Ancient Queen of the Garden

Did you know the hydrangea is an ancient survivor? While we often view them as quintessential cottage garden decor, their roots run deep—roughly 40 to 65 million years deep. Fossilized remains have been found right here in North America, proving that this flower is an ancient queen who has seen eras come and go.

Today, there are nearly 100 species and countless varieties, but her essence remains the same: Unapologetic Presence.

The Victorian Scandal of "Vanity"

Like any good story, the hydrangea has a bit of a misunderstood past. In Victorian England, these showy blooms were often associated with vanity and arrogance. Because these massive, vibrant heads produce very few seeds compared to their size, the Victorians—who were obsessed with "utility" and fertility—judged them for being "all show."

But I see it differently. I think the hydrangea was simply ahead of its time. She wasn't worried about "output" or fitting into a narrow definition of productivity; she was busy claiming her space and being fabulous!

The Fear of Being Noticed

For me, this flower carries a heavy dose of nostalgia. I remember them bursting with color in my childhood garden—so lush, so loud. So opposite of me, I just wanted to hide. For someone who spent a lifetime quietly creating their own world, the idea of being that noticed felt dangerous.

Maybe you’ve felt that too? You have a point of view and you're finally ready to share it, but the fear of judgment keeps those petals tightly closed.

A Ritual for Your Own Fullness

When we look at a hydrangea, we see a masterpiece of abundance. It doesn't ask for permission to take up the whole corner of the yard. It doesn't check the room to see if its blue is "too blue" or its pink is "too much."

It is a talisman for the way forward. In standing out, the hydrangea doesn’t diminish the other flowers in the bouquet; it adds a depth that only comes from being different. It reminds us that:

  • Visibility is a Victory: Opening your inner world to the outer world is an act of courage.

  • Abundance is Internal: We are full of a life well-lived, packed with history, wisdom, and support.

  • Gratitude Replaces Judgment: When we trade the fear of being seen for gratitude for the value we contain, the world changes.

Claim Your Space

So, I invite you to stand tall. Be proud of every season you’ve weathered—the cold winters where you had to go dormant and the springs where you fought to return. You are a unique bloom in this universe, and you deserve to be seen.

What is one area of your life where you are ready to bloom unapologetically? Is it a creative project you’ve kept hidden? A voice you’re ready to let carry? Or perhaps a new "high-contrast" version of yourself you're finally ready to introduce?

Leave a comment below—I’d love to hear what your "fullness" looks like right now.
